There are so many Keyboard Applications that can you download from Android Market. Each keyboard has different layout and capability. If you have some keyboard Applications installed on your Android, you can switch from the default keyboard to another one.
For most text boxes, you can switch input methods (aka keyboards) on the fly. Simply long press on the text box itself. A pop-up menu should appear. With many applications, you will just select the keyboard you want to use right then. With some apps, you may have to select an option that's usually titled "Input Method" (obvious, right!) and then select your desired keyboard.
